I love that quote from Maslin. I have to admit I'm a sucker for unreliable narration and ambiguity in general, but I swear, the real meat of the book is in the characterizations of Judith and John and their extremely complicated reliationship. Don't let the terrible cover and the (possibly offputting) religious stuff discourage you from reading about this amazing relationship.
