Suddenly, I Want To Do This

Certain things in this world make me happy.  Cupcakes.  My tiny little Fuseman.  More cupcakes.  And then there are those odd quirks of fate that just make you happy to be a creature with the wherewithal to acknowledge peculiarities.  I am referring, of course, to a recent Mo Willems blog posting that meticulously explains the extent to which Mo and one Mr. Jon Scieszka have been involved in Precision Drill Cart Teams.  You’ve all been to an ALA Convention before, yes?  And perhaps you have, at some point in your travels, stumbled upon the glory that is the yearly bookcart drill team competition.  Mo gives you a taste of the action, but the real joy is that this year, Mo and Jon will be (I am not making this up) color commentators.  It’s on Sunday at 4:00 in the Washington D.C. Convention Center.  I’m on a tight schedule during that time, running hither and thither…. but this I may just have to see.

Those of you planning to go, would somebody PLEASE take some halfway decent videos of the action.  Nothing against YouTube, but these handheld camera phone vids just aren’t cutting it.

And if any New York librarians want to think about doing this next year, give me a call.  Ooo.  Better yet, let’s get all five boroughs together.

About Elizabeth Bird

Elizabeth Bird is currently the Collection Development Manager of the Evanston Public Library system and a former Materials Specialist for New York Public Library. She has served on Newbery, written for Horn Book, and has done other lovely little things that she'd love to tell you about but that she's sure you'd find more interesting to hear of in person. Her opinions are her own and do not reflect those of EPL, SLJ, or any of the other acronyms you might be able to name. Follow her on Twitter: @fuseeight.

  1. Girl! You know I’m in for next year – Queens will represent!

P.S. I’m not totally comfortable with your new digs yet… What’s with that “Atherton” thingie?!

  2. Fuse #8 says:

All RIGHT! Queens and NYPL are in. Can I hear a Brooklynite or two? Let’s get a full showing, people. I’ll bug Judy Zuckerman to name names.

Yeah. Ad thingy going away. Just wait until after ALA.

Hey, Laura, how come you’re not in that gigantic two page Queens Library ad in the latest American Libraries mag? Nor, for that matter, any of your crew? Seems to me they made a huge mistake in not showing the true hipness of the Queens librarian.
