Poetry Friday: The Collected Works of Susan Ramsey

Poetry Northwest, Spring 2002

Be sure to go to Shaken & Stirred for today’s round-up.

Squirrels on the shed roof, trying to mate,

don’t seem very good at it

though the way he clasps

her approximate waist

with his almost arms,

seems nearly tender,

echoes the human.  That,

and the way,

after several failed attempts,

they stand still, separate,

facing different ways,

for many minutes,

not touching,

not moving away.

About Elizabeth Bird

Elizabeth Bird is currently the Collection Development Manager of the Evanston Public Library system and a former Materials Specialist for New York Public Library. She has served on Newbery, written for Horn Book, and has done other lovely little things that she'd love to tell you about but that she's sure you'd find more interesting to hear of in person.
