I thought this was an outstanding book and my first manga. I loved it; thought the characters sympathetic and believable and loved the diversity of modern Japan. Moe, Hikaru's classmate is one of many non-Asian characters; Sachiko is Western wheras Masato is clearly Asian.

Other Asian characters grace this book such as Hikaru's kind doctor, Dr. Sugita; his day care teacher; one special teacher who worked with Hiroaki (sp) another child with autism and many others.

Characters such as Eri-Chan, a child from Hikaru's early playground days and later his classmate looks quite Asian. Eri-Chan's mother is plainly Japanese, but her father is Western. I find these diverse characters make for a delightful show of diversity.

I love this book and can't wait to read the next installment. The drawings are first rate.
