And I’ve come to this a bit late, so if you’ve all already seen this, forgive me. In Where the Wild Things Came From: How Children’s Books Evolved from Morals to Madcap Fun, the online magazine Slate has this odd little slideshow up that is covers the history of children’s illustration from didactic texts to madcap frenzy. The pictures and history are just ducky, but I was a little weirded out by the authors’ continual attempts to compare pictures to things we would recognize now. In this light, an anthropomorphized sausage brings to mind Mayor McCheese and the Pillsbury Dough Boy while The Goops become predecessors to South Park. It may be worth it just to see Sendak’s illustration from The Hobbit, though. Thanks to Educating Alice for the link.
