I've had this on my pile for a few weeks---saw a preview at the Jump at the Sun booth at NCTE. I haven't gotten to it yet but will move it closer to the top after your review--thanks!

The Bibliography isn't huge, but it's certainly interesting. About thirteen titles are included and they range from autobiographies like "Maybe I'll Pitch Forever" by Satchel Paige to recent titles like "Ruling Over Monarchs, Giants and Stars" by Bob Motley, published in 2007. The collection is primarily, maybe solely, adult titles. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that until now there wasn't much out there about the Negro Leagues published for kids. I would have appreciated a website or two, but it's not essential.

I saw this book at a bookstore about a week ago and immediately thought that it would be a 2009 Caldecott winner for Mr. Nelson. Your review confirms that. He's going to be at a local bookstore giving a presentation on 'Ship' in the coming weeks. I think I'll go and get my copy autographed now - he'll be harder to catch when he wins a Caldecott again!

I just wrote a piece for my blog (www.readingandbreathing.blogspot.com) talking about why blog reviews are so important. I realize that I didn't think to talk about the fact that reviews in journals are limited in the length each is allowed to be but because bloggers can thoroughly review their books, the reader can truly get a feel for the book. This review was beautiful. I now want to rush out and buy the book today. I just read the Satchel Paige graphic novel and can't wait to show it to teachers -- this book will make a great companion.
