We LOVE Alvin! My son who is quite a bit like Alvin adored these books. Before we found these books he would actually use the phrase "I'm allergic to..." (homemade pizza, basketballs, etc...) to get out of doing things, so we were hooked just by reading the title. He loved Alvin's honesty and his ability to own his fears and related to having a silly sister like Alvin's. He read these in Kindergarten and is in second grade now and still will bring up things he remembers randomly from one of the Alvin Ho books.

My first child, a girl, has read through every genre already. My second is a son, in K, an early reader, so this is timely, and I've been thinking of it.

Of course Magic Treehouse features a boy and a girl, and I also thought of Johanna Hurtwitz's early readers that feature some boys or boy/girl combos.

Do you know what I find a scary thought: many of today's kids, and certainly most of those in the future, will be reacting to references to chicken pox the way I used to react to references to mumps when I was a child. IE, with a vague awareness that "that used to be a sickness kids got" and then dismissing it as "used to be". None of the under-12's I know have ever had the chicken pox, because most of them have had the vaccine. (At least in my part of MA, it's a school-attending requirement.)

Looks like a good book though, I ordered it just yesterday, and now I'm doubly glad.
