I was given How to Catch A Star as a gift one year and fell in love with this guy. My librarian friend went nuts (in a good way) over the use of old books in The Incredible Book Eating Boy. I will definitely check this one out. Thanks for reviewing it.

Oliver Jeffers is one of my favorite author/illustrators today. From an artist perspective his style is so sophisticated I find that you don’t normally see it in American children’s publishing. The style isn’t so uncommon in Europe from what I’ve seen (“The Land of the Hungry Armadillo’s” is one example) I know lots of art students who would probably kill to try and loosen up their drawing arms like he can.

That’s what I’m saying. Of course it comes down to whether or not you’d consider a book great because it comes up with concepts and ideas never before considered, or because it drills a nail file into your heart. I incline towards the latter category, but I can see it both ways.

I was wondering whether to disagree with you about Lost and Found being his best book to date, because we really adore The Incredible Book Eating Boy. But on reflection, I think you may be right. Book Eating Boy is addictively inventive, but Lost and Found really gets you where you live.
