It's a Peter and the Wolf wannabe. So far, the story doesn't seem nearly as good as Peter and the Wolf, but the whole story-and-orchestra idea is delightful, and I was wondering why more people don't do it. Of course, Jim Dale's incredible vocal ability makes The Shoebird audio version fantastic. I would LOVE to see him perform it live. I am thoroughly enjoying The Shoebird, despite the rather silly story, and that makes me want to get my hands on this Lemony Snicket offering. My orchestra actually has it on its performance calendar for April. I'd like see how the whole thing goes together. I have to agree with your comments about "Peter and the Wolf." My kids in early elementary liked it well enough, but for them it paled against the opportunity to dance and roar around to "March to the Scaffold" and "Rite of Spring" or the sound track to "The Commitments." She assigns each member of our family a different part every time we listen, and takes particular delight in choosing who will be the duck. We've been through at least four versions so far (books and videos). Also, I now cannot remove from my mind the image of slipping into a hot bath with Daniel Handler. Thanks for that.
