Olivier Tallec has also illustrated as series of books which he co-authored with Jean-Philippe Arrou-Vignod (Rita et Machin / Rita and Whatsit) and a look at the original text and the American translation shows a definite difference in tone. While the French text is more nuanced, the American version is very straightforward. The translation of the UK edition, however, was closer to the subtlety of the French text. I am a big fan of "Rita and Whatsit" -- another delightful French import, in my opinion! The issue of translation is an interesting one. What I really liked was that it was about wolves which pretty much never happens. It does very much have a European sensibility though and is most certainly a keeper.
