Women in Comics: Female Graphic Novelists Writing with Kids and Teens in Mind
Join a distinguished panel of three of the finest women writing comics for kids today as they discuss the field, their new books, and how they came to the format in the first place. Featuring Colleen AF Venable (Hamster and Cheese), Raina Telegemeier (Smile), and Tracy White (How I Made it to Eighteen).
Raina Telgemeier’s graphic memoir, SMILE (Scholastic/Graphix), tells the tale of how she lost her two front permanent teeth in a trip-and-fall accident in middle school, and the subsequent years she spent getting her SMILE back. She is the adaptor and illustrator of the Baby-sitters Club graphic novel series (Scholastic/Graphix), and the co-author of X-Men: Misfits (Del Rey Manga). Raina’s comics have been nominated for the Ignatz, Cybil, and Eisner Awards .
Colleen AF Venable is a comics writer and the designer for First Second Books, the award-winning graphic novel publisher. Colleen’s debut graphic novel, HAMSTER AND CHEESE, is the first in a series illustrated by Stephanie Yue and published by Graphic Universe.
Tracy White (www.traced.com) is a webcomics pioneer who began publishing her work online in 1996. A native of New York City , Tracy has made comics for gURL.com, AOL, and Oxygen TV, as well as a docu-comic for the Lower East Side Tenement Museum about the experiences of immigrant teens living in New York. Her webcomic has been nominated twice for an Ignatz Award. Tracy is currently an adjunct professor at the Interactive Telecommunication Program, which is part of NYU’s TISCH School of the Arts. Her latest book is HOW I MADE IT TO EIGHTEEN: A MOSTLY TRUE STORY, published by Roaring Brook Press.
