Hannah is off to secondary school (you have to be 11 by the end of August for that) and Molly has her May birthday. Since Hannah is a year and half older, Molly is almost certainly 9 at the beginning of the book and turns 10 at the end of it, making Hannah 11 and three quarters (give or take) by August!
