I think that would be a very good explanation for those kids squeamish about characters eating one another. However, the bear’s pronouncement that he has not eaten a rabbit . . . well, methinks the bear, he doth protest too much.

Um, I thought the bear sat on the rabbit, not ate him. Not that that interpretation changes my intense love for the book and mounting anticipation as the day comes when I can read it to the kids at story time at the bookstore where I work. Move over Mo.

Thanks for clarifying what that creature is…I thought it was a beaver (but maybe that’s because I’m Canadian.) Saw this book mentioned in the Playing By the Book blog and it instantly became my number one most anticipated book of 2011 (so far.) Now that I’ve read your review, the long wait until the September release date is going to kill me..

Hurray! Jon Klassen’s work is amazing, and I’m so glad he is being discovered as a children’s book illustrator! I was so happy and fortunate to have him be the illustrator for my book cover. He’s got such a wonderful range, and definitely a sense of humor. I can’t wait to buy I WANT MY HAT BACK.

It’s not just you. That would have been better. Though there’s something poetic in the broken fern. It suggests quite a bit of violence.

This book is the best thing to happen in ages and ages. It makes me incredibly happy. The only thing that would have made it better is if some editor would have let him scatter (spoiler alert!) some bones and fur around the last page. But maybe that’s just me.
