I have no tolerance for cutesy either so I was prepared to not like it, but it is cute without making me want to gag. You hit it exactly when you brought up how the mother bear responds. The straightforwardness of the text keeps it from being too much. My 7 year old even appreciated it and really loved the illustrations especially. The 3 year old slept with it. There were serious moments of distress when he couldn't find it this morning because it had slipped off and under his bed in the night. Definitely a hit.
