I like the idea of a character who doesn’t have to leave town and "make it big" to be important. Kind of reminds me of George Bailey deciding he's most needed in Bedford Falls.

Another great hometown hero picture book is HERE COMES DARRELL by Leda Schubert, illustrated by Mary Azarian. Darrell helps everybody in his small town—plowing driveways, chopping wood, etc.—so much so, that he neglects his own needs. But, like the townspeople of Bedford Falls, Darrell's neighbors all rally to show Darrell how much they appreciate him when he's the one who could use some help. Great book!
