I read it to a little girl, six years old, who came back to share the story with her younger sister. The six year old couldn't read, but she held the book open and spoke in a monotone to simulate reading. When she got to the page with the lions on it, she improvised: "So then, the Queen said, `Jesus, you can't bring them lions in here!'" Not exactly what De Regniers had in mind, but delicious. I'm not sure how many times I ended up reading it--but suffice to say that by the end of the 22-hour round trip, I had it almost memorized. ...so I brought my friend.
