This was the first long book I ever read all by myself. I was five. It remains one of my favorites to this day. I have two hardcover copies sitting on my shelf currently: one to keep, and one to give away.

Forget all other books. This is THE book for me. The weird thing is, I wouldn't even call it my favorite of the series (that honor goes to "Ozma" or "The Patchwork Girl"), but I still call it my all time favorite book. That's because Oz is the standard by which all books are judged. Are the characters as intrepid as Dorothy? As delightfully evil as the Wicked Witch? Is the journey as satisfying? I read Oz countless times as a child, and still read it today.

Er . . . well, if we take into consideration how long people used to live back then, then yes! Well into middle age sounds about right. *backs away slowly*

Excuse me, Betsy, but 44 is "well into middle age"?!? (I couldn't let that one pass!) The Oz books are indeed wonderful!

I'm a huge Oz fan and have turned some little boys and girls, both, into delighted fans recently. It's so much fun to discover that there's MORE than just the first book! I loved Marvelous Land of Oz myself. I'm actually reading Wizard of Oz to my kids now (second round for my 6 year old. She's a fan, too)

In a quest to read or reread all the book from this list the first time around I recently reread TWOO. Still didn't love it. I feel so out of the loop of love with this and Alice and Wonderland.

Betsy,

There actually was a Land of Oz theme park at Beech Mountain, North Carolina. I went once as a little girl. It's not open as a theme park anymore, but they have yearly reunions and I think you can still walk along the yellow brick road.
