This is the first book I remember reading as a babysitter, to the delight of the toddler I was sitting for.

My favorite line, spoken in a tiny voice: “Do you know that you are very strong?”

When I worked as a children’s librarian (public library), we could not keep this one on the shelf. It was the most reserved book EVER!

I have read/heard so many people say they will not give this book to their kids, because it encourages bullying. ???? Apparently “tormenting” Grover by turning the pages even though he’s terrified taps into kids’ malicious natures. I always thought, if you HAD to impute some sort of moral lesson to this, that it was more about the importance of facing one’s fears and learning that they aren’t really so bad after all, but hey, what do I know?

OH how I loved this book as a kid (and still do)! I used to imitate Grover saying, “Oh I’m so embarrassed.” My dad thought it was pretty funny. I really wanted to get this book and couldn’t find it ANYWHERE (I could only find the abomination)-but then found it a few weeks ago at A.C. Moore of all places. Weird.

I just read this aloud during summer library last week. Along with PRESS HERE, the best audience participation books of all time.
