Aw, here I was hoping the E.L. stood for Emily Louise (ahem).

This was one of the few books that was neither fantasy nor old-fashioned that I actually liked enough to read AND re-read when I was a kid. Pretty impressive, for me!

Elaine Lobl. I admit I had to look up the "L." I was thrilled to get a signed copy of this book when I was wandering past Books of Wonder, and saw she would be speaking there. Love this book!

I was given the assignment, with another woman (new to the city), of visiting someone over on the East Side. As we rode the bus through Central Park, past the lake, the woman said, "Oh! There really are boats on the lake!" I knew immediately that she was thinking of "The Saturdays" and said, "Yep. That's where Randy fell in."

When we arrived at Fifth Avenue, and walked north, she saw the Met and mentioned that there was a bed there that she wanted to see. I had to tell her that it wasn't on display anymore, and that the fountain wasn't, either, but the Egyptian exhibits were still there.

And that's how I met one of my best friends, who it turned out had read and love all of the same books as me.

The museum has a nice brochure for those wanting a "Mixed Up Files" tour:

Fools. B'nai Bagels is the pick of the litter, by far my favorite (though I have a soft spot for A Fine Taste for Scarlet and Minever.) Still, every time some vapid idiot says "Nothing is impossible" I remember Mrs. Basil E.
