One of your most entertaining posts. Could not stop smiling, envisioning your necklace's production and you wearing it. Excellent. Shrinky Dinks were part of my childhood, buy never so remarkably decorated! Inspiring.

If I'm not mistaken, Betsy had a Shrinky-Dink hairclip/barrette in the shape of one of the medals (I didn't get a close enough look at it).

P.S. Thanks for the tip about #6 plastic, Karen! My daughter goes through Shrinky-Dink plastic like nobody's business so it'll be nice to salvage some recyclables instead of shelling out money for the store-bought kind.

Yep, I heard from some folks who sat in the back having eaten their dinner beforehand. If you take the seats in the rear you don't have to pay, you can sit with your wine and chat with equally interesting folks as those at the tables, and you're even closer to the receiving line at the end. I think next year I'll go that route. Sorry you missed the line, though! I should write up a What To Do at the Newbery/Caldecott Banquet info bit for next year.

I too was a wayward soul at my first Newbery/Caldecott banquet and have decided that it is no fun to go alone--even though I sat with a friendly, pleasant group of other waywardees. Not only was there no complementary wine, as a vegetarian, I had to ask for a voucher in order to get my meal. Naturally, I found out about this the hard way: "I'm sorry but we'll have to serve everyone else first to see if there's anything left for you." Fortunately, there was a stray unclaimed dish (thank you) so I didn't have to resort to making a meal of the rolls and the salad at the empty seat . Ah well. I was delighted by the pop-up program, the speeches and the general festivities; I left in search of the bus back to the hotel only to discover that they were waiting in a different location, giving me the opportunity to walk off that lovely chocolaty dessert. Alas I missed the receiving line--maybe next time!

Now off to find Starr and to ask HER where she got her inspiration. We'll track this to its source yet!

To give credit where it's due... I learned to dress up for banquet from Starr Latronica, now ALSC VP. Before I even dreamed of being a librarian, I worked in the Berkeley Public Library with her and Linda Perkins. It was 1991, and Black and White was the Caldecott....and Starr made UDDER purses for her and Ruth Gordon to wear to the banquet. This, then, was imprinted on my nascent idea of what it was to be a children's librarian.

Gypsy moth hair accessories. You guys (and your subtle predictions) crack me up.

Yep, there was a CD on everyone's plate of the speeches. No offense to Raschka but the Gantos is the one worth shelling out cash for. I have loads of these things from prior years. Someday I'll put 'em together into a great big copyright breaking dance mix.

Sam, gypsy moths would make great hair accessories!

A couple of years ago I was given an audio of the Pinkwater/Stead speech. Will there be a CD of Gantos?

FYI, for anyone wanting to create these things but isn't artistic enough to draw the images, you can find printable shrinking plastic and use an inkjet printer! See more here: http://content.photojojo.com/diy/shrink-plastic-photo-jewelry/
