[...] Charlotte’s Web was Chapter Book #1, with 349 points. And The Trumpet of the Swan had two people vote for it with a 2nd place and a 4th place ranking, for a total of 16 points. I was surprised that Stuart Little got no points at all. [...]

You know, Benjamin, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that this story may be my favorite Charlotte's Web related anecdote of all time. Yep. It's official. You win.

In high school French we spent one period watching a video about Napoleon Bonaparte. We were supposed to complete a worksheet of fill-in-the-blank and true/false questions based on the program. Under the prompt 'Napoleon was a humble man', I circled 'T' for True. After the movie our teacher reviewed the correct answers, including 'F' for the above statement. I hotly contested this answer, arguing that in Charlotte's Web, the word 'humble' is shown to have two meanings: "not proud" and "near the ground". While Napoleon might not have fit the former, he certainly qualified for the latter (his shortness was even discussed at length in the film.) The teacher (to this day one of my favorites) awarded me half credit on the question, based on the fact that I had cited a literary reference. Charlotte's Web is about many things, but for me it will always be a story about learning to play with language, to embrace and use words so that they get you what you want or deliver you from a nasty end. For this important lesson, I give E.B. White full credit.

CHARLOTTE now and forever! Just want to mention Michael Sims' lovely book from last year, THE STORY OF CHARLOTTE'S WEB. It is a beautifully researched and written consideration of White's inspirations and writing of the book.
