Wow! If you can find a copy of The Mailbox, well done. That puppy sank like a stone and didn't leave so much as a blip on the surface of the water. I feel like I'm the only one who even remembers it anymore.

Just read it, loved it far more than I thought I would (should've trusted you as per usual), and put Eggs and The Mailbox on hold. Thank you!

I always have difficulty pairing these books with readalikes, but Crunch is an EXCELLENT similar read. Excellent point, Chris. I think I'm going to add that.

Really enjoyed spending a hot weekend indoors reading this one. I was always a succker as a kid for those books where the kids were surviving on their own, without adult intervention. Was a little worried that this would become a little too "Afterschool special-ish" but Pennypacker avoids that. If I read it as a kid, all the good writing would have sailed over my head (although I appreciate it as an adult). I too, like the main character, loved it when books dealt with the practicality of taking care of oneself when without adult supervision (this may be why I liked Crunch from last summer so much, too). I agree that this is a good read and the humor really sets it above many other "realistic" middle grade titles.

I just loved this book! I was not aware a dead body was involved, and was so delighted when it happened! A book about kids hiding a dead body? By the author of Clementine?! Wow!

I've already written my review and plan to post it soon. This was my top Newbery pick when I read it -- until I read Shannon Hale's Palace of Stone. (Admittedly, I have a huge weakness for Shannon Hale's books.)
