A tad fancy for predictable, stereotyped rural circumstances, maybe -- but Louie keeps it real by keeping it unpredictable, and adds a little implied style just by existing. Vive Louie!

Louie (the Papillon) came oh so close to be being cut from the story. I felt he was a tad fancy for the rural circumstances. But my publisher felt his scruffier replacement lacked the same...character. It's almost as if Louie were the author's dog or something...

Ooh, I need this book. I was blessed with grandmothers and a mother who could, and did, knit and sew. In general, it was a blessing. Until the 70s, when one grandma started sending me double knit pants with elastic waists (I vividly remember the lime green pair) and matching vests. I was expected to wear the outfits to school at least once. In junior high, no less. To teach me gratitude.

Now I sew gifts for my friend's children. I should probably get this book for them for Christmas...

Oh my. What a magnificent book for the children of knitters! To laugh at ourselves, I hope. Inexplicably, my son left some of the sweaters I knit him behind when he moved out. Go figure. I want that book!

Hi, can i ask you something? I’m looking for children books with “scary” animal illustrations like the big bad wolf (or a fox) eating pigs (or seven kids or Red Riding hood or birds in Chicken Little) or being pictured with a fat stomach. Could be any other animal as well. Have you seen any book of this sort? Any sort of help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You know I did think about mentioning the Papillon but couldn't figure out how to work it in. And fear not. The knitting is eventually embraced by those who can truly appreciate it. And, more to the point, it is never referred to as scratchy. I know you would have disliked that, mom.

As a knitter I blush, I squirm, I shrivel. But I rise above that to holler "How can you not mention that his dog is a Papillon?" This may be the first time in picture book history that a boy's loyal companion is the same breed as Marie Antoinette's exquisite jewel!
