I can't help but think with affection of the prophecies provided by Hen Wen in Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain as well as the prophecies. And I also liked the one's in Susan Cooper's in The Dark is Rising books. Of course, they got me when I was elementary school, but my taste hasn't seemed to improve....

Currently reading for the Cybils Middle grade SF & Fantasy... I am sooo with you on prophecies!

Though I have to say that one I liked the way they dealt with prophecy was Rae Carson's The Girl of Fire & Thorns. What I liked was that every faction in the country had a different idea about how the prophecy about her worked -- so it got her into trouble instead of just loading her with "destiny."

Thanks Betsy for giving a shout out to my favorite book of the year. I knew I couldn't be the only one who thought this was well-written and funny. I so love an author who pays attention to details and gives his characters great dialogue, as well as well developed sense of place and fast moving plot. This is my top choice for holiday gift giving. Maybe if we wish hard enough that sequel will appear shortly.

Yay! I can't wait to read this one. I loved Fly By Night. Of course, I'm biased since Brian is my editor and all, but still--it sounds fantastic!

True! Though, by the same token, it's his fault (alongside C.S. Lewis, to be fair) that we got stuck with as many prophecies as we did. Between the two of them they made them sound WAY too interesting. Scale it back, folks. Scale it back.

This one caught my eye on the Kirkus list--glad to know that you think it's good too!

and oh my goodness I am so with you viz ryhming prophecies--why can't they be expressed (if they must be expressed) in plain English? Why must the words be so tortured? I have given this much thought, and the only rhyming one that works for me is Tolkien's "Seek for the sword that is broken" because at least it provides reasonably clear instructions.
