Peter Drucker

The late Peter Drucker wrote in The Effective Executive wrote about the Knowledge Worker  (via comment by reece lennon)

From the 1994 Edwin Godkin Lecture on Peter Drucker's theory of the "Knowledge workers, even though only a large minority of the work force, already give the emerging knowledge society its character, its leadership, its central challenges and its social profile. They may not be the ruling class of the knowledge society, but they already are its leading class. In their characteristics, their social positions, their values and their expectations, they differ fundamentally from any group in history that has ever occupied the leading, let along the dominant position." (Knowledge Work and Knowledge Society  The Social Transformations of this Century Peter F. Drucker)
