21st Century Storytelling: Ubuntu Week

Last week was

Ubuntu Week at The Hewitt School and we were fortunate to have authors Jon Scieszka and Jacqueline Woodson spend some quality time with our girls. Take a look.

The reason Jacqueline Woodson’s video segment was cut short was because  she instructed our student reporter to put away the camera. Which made sense.  She wanted the student to be fully present, and to really listen to her.  That ‘reporter’ was my daughter and it was a wonderful lesson for her (and me) to learn — respect the wishes of others.  My daughter gracefully obliged.

((A side note: If you have student reporters roaming around your school, do advise them to ask for an interview first. That was a good mommy/mentor lesson, too.))

But Jacqueline’s story was amazing to listen to.  She not only connects with young people, she delves deep into her soul to translate her written words into sounds. Those sounds resonated with me. Where she lived. Her family. It all gets unraveled in her books.  She’s brilliant, and masterful at engaging young people to understand the essence of what makes a community.  Jacqueline also noted that learning about different communities opens doors to understanding one another.  If you head over to Robin Adelson’s blog, Robin’s Roundup, you’ll learn WHY these authors visited The Hewitt School last week. And what a week it was!
