Writers Against Racism: Tell Me A Story

Happy Easter to those celebrating Easter on this beautiful Sunday.

My parish church held its annual Easter Vigil last night.  The lights were dimmed during  most of the mass which always makes me slightly uncomfortable. After the gospel reading, the deacon shared the story of 60-Minutes creator, Don Hewitt, and told the congregation Don’s response when asked what made 60-Minutes a successful news program. Don’s response, according to Deacon Greg Kandra, “Four words…tell me a story.” The deacon beautifully wove this story into the gospel reading and without ‘preaching’, underscored the need to keep telling stories. School Library Journal does this brilliantly and has the 60-Minutes ethos.

Lastly, and the importance of Easter…the sermon immediately catapulted me back to Chimanda Adiche and her TED Talk on The Danger of the Single Story. This post, while not profound,  will remind us all of the importance of  “the story…yours and mine.”
