Writers Against Racism: An Open Letter To The Late Trayvon Martin

Dear Trayvon:

Like you, my baby brother was murdered because of his skin color. Believe me; I know what your family is going through and how your loss will now be their future. Do know that we, as a community, will work to educate people so this never happens again.

When I first heard about your story I was deeply saddened; as a mother, instinctively I wanted to protect you like I tried for my brother, Abby. Then I started to reflect on what your last moments must have been and how vulnerable you were. I AM SO SORRY THIS HAPPENED. If you could only see the support you are receiving from people far and wide, you would know that your death will not be in vain. We ‘got’ your family under our wings. I have also reached out to authors to have them share how education and books could have stopped this from happening to you.

In my thoughts.

Why oh why oh why oh why?

Sincerely,

Amy Bowllan
