Brigid Alverson

I interviewed Barry Deutsch, creator of Hereville, for this week’s Publishers Weekly Comics Week.

If you’re not a regular visitor to the main SLJ site, you should drop in and check out this month’s articles on nonfiction graphic novels for teens and middle schoolers.

Christopher Butcher posts on an unfortunate oversight. Recently, Mariko Tamaki, nominated for a Governor General’s Literary Award, which is a pretty big deal in Canada, for her graphic novel Skim. The problem is that the nominating authority chose not to recognize Jillian Tamaki, the illustrator. Now two Canadian creators have written to the awards committee asking them to reconsider, pointing out that Skim is a graphic novel, not an illustrated prose novel. Jillian Tamaki also posted her reaction on her blog. At last word, the awards committee declined to extend the award to Tamaki. The Comics Reporter has more.

At the Newsarama blog, Chris Mautner and his daughter Veronica field-test a handful of Toon books: Jack and the Box, Mo and Jo: Fighting Together Forever, and Stinky.

Paul Gravett writes about comics adaptation of the classics and the British government’s report on getting boys to read books.

For those who enjoyed the first volume of Matt Loux’s Salt Water Taffy, volume 2 is out this week!

Comic Book Resources is giving away a copy of The Good Neighbors – Book One: Kin, by Holly Black and Ted Naifeh.

I loved The Beano when I was a kid, so it’s great to hear it’s still going strong.

Interesting interview with Barry Deutsch. I discovered his comic “..Mirka” here at Good Comics for Kids. So, reading about his recent publishing success has been inspiring.
