Inside Good Comics For Kids

All ages comics and manga list for 11/19/08

Lori Henderson

It’s a small week this week, sadly devoid of any manga.  DC continues its push to get younger kids into their universe, with new Super Friends and Tiny Titans issues.  Gemstone keeps the tradition of Disney comics alive, with one title, Walt Disney’s Comics & Stories reaching Detective Comics and Action Comics issue number heights!  Even in comics, it doesn’t have to always be just about superheroes.

Picks:

Night School GN – This is not the Night School manga by Svetlana Chmakova being serialized in Yen Press’ Yen Plus magazine.  This title is listed as coming from Arcana Studios, but seems to really be from Platinum Studios, or at least distributed by them.  Kojo Academy of Music has nighttime classes for very special students; Vampires, Ice Dragons and She-elfs roam the campus.  This title follows cast of characters as they go through the trials of education and socialization.  The art has a manga-esque feel to it.  It is a continuing color webcomic, that has been compiled into a black and white GN. It will probably appeal most to middle school and High School students, who can relate best to it’s themes. You can check out the webcomic here.

Doctor Who: Forgotten #3 – This second original series of Doctor Who written for US audiences.  In this title, fans who may have only seen the new 2005 series get a primer in the long history of the Doctor and his previous regenerations.  The 10th Doctor and Martha arrive at a museum that seems to be dedicated to the Doctor.  Upon arrival, the Doctor loses all his memories of his past, and by touching items from his previous regenerations, he relives adventures from that time, and regains those memories.  This issue features two Doctors well known to American fans, the 4th and 5th Doctors.  Doctor Who is first and foremost a children’s series, and these comics are written with that in mind.  The art is the same as the first 10th Doctor series also published by IDW.  The stories are short but entertaining, encompassing all the best of the Doctors.
