Inside Good Comics For Kids

All ages comics and manga for 1/14/09

It’s feast time again, with a good list of books this week.  You’ll see the Marvel section extended from now on, since I’ve put the limit on this list to 12 and under, that brings in their second tier rating of A (9-12) books.  There’s both manga and comics this week from DC/CMX and Viz, as well as another Naruto chapter book.  They are really pumping these out!  I hope they’ve been successful for Viz.  IDW has been a surprisingly regular contributor to this list now with both their comics and Worthwhile line.  It’s nice to see a publisher get behind an idea.  If only their webiste would reflect this as well.

My Grandparents Are Secret Agents – Worthwhile Books, the kid’s books arm of IDW has another graphic novel that looks like will really appeal to kids.  What kid doesn’t love their grandparents?  They always buy cool things (other than clothes) and are a lot more fun than parents.  They get to travel, have strange gadgets like hearing aides and pace makers that just slip through airport security.  What if they got to do all this because they were really secret agents?  Fighting evil and saving the world Old School style!  This is another title by Scott Christian Sava, the creator of Dreamland Chronicles.  This looks like a title that would really appeal to kids.  Fun and adventure with the grandparents.  What could be cooler?

Prince of Tennis Vol 29Prince of Tennis is an all ages sports manga about…tennis.  Though, it’s less about the actual sport and more about the fantastic moves players have, especially Ryoma Echizen, a 12 year old at the start of the series, who is determined to be the best tennis player in the world.  28 volumes later, and Ryoma and his school team from Seishun have arrived at the Nationals.  Among their competitors are old rival Rokkaku and unknown Higa High School from Okinawa.  Ryoma must face against Higa’s heavy hitter Kei Tanishi and his unreturnable "Big Bang" serve.  Prince of Tennis is very much a shonen title, with the tennis court as the battlefield and tennis rackets the weapon of choice.  The sheer outrageousness of the serves and returns make this title great for tweens and the game of tennis more interesting than 3-D pong.
