The nominations for the Joe Shuster Awards for the best kids’ comics by Canadian creators have been announced:
Clayton Hanmer, CTON’s Super A-Maze-ing Year of Crazy Comics! (OwlKids)
Susan Hughes and Willow Dawson, No Girls Allowed (Kids Can Press)
Karl Kerschl and Serge Lapointe (with Amy Wolfram, USA), Teen Titans: Year One (DC Comics)
Liam O’Donnell and Michael Deas, Ramp Rats — A Graphic Guide Adventure (Orca Publishing)
Paul Roux, Ariane et Nicolas Tome 5: Les tours de Babel (Editions Les 400 Coups)
Chad Solomon (with Christopher Meyer, USA), The Adventures of Rabbit and Bear Paws Vol. 2: The Voyageurs (Little Spirit Bear Productions)
Kean Soo, Jellaby, Book 1 (Hyperion)
Mariko Tamaki and Steve Rolston, Emiko Superstar (DC/Minx)
Also, it’s worth pointing out that while this year’s Harvey Award nominations are controversial for a number of reasons, comics for children and teens are very well represented, with nominations going to John Gallagher, Thom Zahler, and Rich Faber for Buzzboy, Jimmy Gownley for Amelia Rules, Jeff Kinney for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Jason Kruse for World of Quest, Frank Cammuso for Otto’s Orange Day, and Jillian and Mariko Tamaki for Skim. Plus some of the reprint books (Peanuts, Wacky Packages) are kid favorites.
Kazu Kibuishi is on a roll: His Flight 5 was nominated for a Harvey award, he just got advance copies of Amulet 2, and he and wife Amy are expecting their first child in November. Congratulations on all counts!
Raina Telgemeier has wrapped up her work on Smile, which should be out in February.
