Inside Good Comics For Kids

All ages comics and manga for 12/16/09

Lori Henderson

Winter break starts this weekend.  Are you ready with titles to keep the kids entertained before Santa comes sliding down the chimney?  This week’s list has most of the usual titles, and not a lot with the Christmas theme, shooting up their re-readability.  Boom! Studios releases the trade of Finding Nemo: Reef Rescue for libraries to add to their collections.  Dynamite Entertainment releases a rare all ages title for their catalog, and it’s a classic!  IDW also has a trade of it’s popular Transformers Animated, and the second issue of Marvel’s Marvelous Land of Oz comes out this week.

Picks:

Complete Alice in Wonderland #1 – This is part of a new series by Dynamite Entertainment that adapts literary works to comics.  This series will adapt both books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass, will include extras such as script pages, annotations, and samplings of Carroll’s original text.  This is a good way to introduce kids to a classic.  It rated on the upper end of the all ages scale, 10+, making it perfect for a middle school library, but elementary libraries with 5th-6th graders might want to consider this as well.

Marvel Super Hero Squad #4 – This is the final issue of a mini series based on the cartoon, which is based on a toy line.  It’s Marvel’s staple of superheroes, super deformed and made cute, battling the baddies, who are just as SD and cute. There’s no specific story that runs throughout this series, other than the cartoon’s premise of the superheroes trying to find the Infinitiy shards before the villains do.  Aimed at younger audiences, this title will appeal to kids as young as 6 and reach to close to 10.  Elementary libraries looking for some age appropriate super hero action can feel safe with this series.
