Welcome to the Manga Movable Feast: Kids’ Table!
For this week, bloggers, commentators, and reviewers will be discussing Yotsuba&! by Kiyohiko Azuma from Yen Press plus one kids friendly manga title of their choice. For more on the Mange Movable Feast, please check out the call for entries here. Participants, please send your links to entries to me at robin (at) noflyingnotights.com.
To give everyone a bit of background on the series:
From the Yen Press site:
“Yotsuba is a strange little girl with a big personality! Even in the most trivial, unremarkable encounters, Yotsuba’s curiosity and enthusiasm quickly turn the everyday into the extraordinary!”
Yotsuba’s adventures around her neighborhood, with the company of her father, her neighbors, and various friends, are the focus of this comedy series. Her naive and credulous attitude is what provides much of the humor as she discovers new and exciting ideas (doorbells! gangster movies! art!).
Yotsuba&! was (and still is) serialized in Dengeki Daioh (Japanese website here), a magazine aimed at adult men, as an ongoing series. Originally published in the United States by ADV Manga starting in 2005, who released five volumes, the series was then happily rereleased (and re-translated) by Yen Press starting in 2009. Yen Press continues to release volumes with volume 9 set to hit the shelves in December 2010.

Kiyohiko Azuma is know best in the US for his series Azumanga Daioh (also originally published by ADV Manga and snapped up by Yen Press.) The Azumanga Daioh anime series spread the original manga work’s popularity. Currently no anime is planned for Yotsuba&!

While Yotsuba&! is not officially a children’s series, as noted above, it has been embraced by young readers here in the United States as well as older readers.
Let the discussions begin! Our archive post will be the page to bookmark for all posts as the week progresses, so check back often for updates.
