Brigid Alverson

ICv2 reports that Disney has four new graphic novels in the works: Two adaptations of popular youth novels, The Lightning Thief: The Graphic Novel and The Amulet of Samarkand: A Bartimaeus Graphic Novel, from the Hyperion imprint, and Tron: The Betrayal Graphic Novel and Hey, Where’s Perry in the Disney Press imprint.

I talked to Francoise Mouly about her deal with Candlewick, which will now publish Toon Books as an imprint, taking over some of the marketing and distribution and freeing her up to do the editing.

Liquid Comics is launching a new superhero, the Silver Scorpion, who lost his legs in a landmine accident and now champions peace and tolerance. What could possibly be wrong with that? Well, he’s Muslim, and that is raising some hackles, as is an animated cartoon of the Muslim superheroes The 99. Apparently religious cartoons are a sinister attempt to indoctrinate our youth… oh, wait… Never mind.

Skottie Young observes that there really isn’t a shortage of good kids’ comics, although J.L. Bell points out that since he started reading comics in his early teens, he’s really not talking about what we think of as “kids’ comics.”

A local TV station pays a visit to the book club run by Chris Wilson, the teacher who also blogs at The Graphic Classroom.
