The 2011 Sydney Taylor Awards have been announced and comics make the cut!
(From the website) The Sydney Taylor Book Award honors new books for children and teens that exemplify the highest literary standards while authentically portraying the Jewish experience. The award memorializes Sydney Taylor, author of the classic All-of-a-Kind Family series. The winners will receive their awards at the Association of Jewish Libraries convention in Montreal this June.
This year, 2 graphic novels were recognized. Barry Deutsch’s Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword, published by Amulet, won the Gold Medal for Older Readers. It is the first time a graphic novel has won the award. A silver medal was awarded to Resistance by Carla Jablonski with art by Leland Purvis published by First Second in the Older Reader Categories.
Both titles are also 2011 Great Graphic Novel For Teens picks.
