As February comes to an end, it’s the graphic novels and trades that really shine this week. Boom! Studios releases the collected Muppet Sherlock Holmes. If you’ve been waiting to read the great detective as you’ve never seen him before, now’s your chance. Campfire keeps with the theme of the month with a new graphic novel based on the myth of Eros and Psyche. And Yen Press releases the second in a series that turns fairy tales on their head with Hunger of the Seven Squat Bears. And it’s books for the younger crowd in the picks.

The Picks:

alpha 299x240 All ages comics and manga for 2/23/11Alpha League SC – In this new graphic novel from Eigomanga, a publisher of web and OEL comics, young kids get to read about a science fiction and fantasy world filled with child-heroes. Each hero is named after a letter of the alphabet with some alliterate prose. Each hero is located in a different place around the world that goes with their letter, and a globe points the place, teaching geography as well as expanding vocabulary. There isn’t a story to this book, so older kids will probably not be interested. But kids in grades K-2 will no doubt be more receptive to it, so elementary school librarians and teachers should check it out. The link has a preview so you can get an idea of how it looks.

Binky Space Cat 1 All ages comics and manga for 2/23/11Binky the Space Cat vol 1 – Even cats can have wild imaginations. Binky thinks he’s a space cat, when really, he’s just a house cat who has never left the family “space station.” And he has a mission; he must train so he can repel the aliens (bugs) that threaten to attack his humans. With the blue prints to a spaceship and his co-pilot Ted (a stuffed mousie), Binky prepares to blast off, until he realizes he’s forgotten something very important. This title sounds like a lot of fun, and the art looks really cute. Kids in elementary school will get the biggest kick out this title, though Binky’s quirky imagination could entertain kids of all ages. Check out Snow’s review of this volume here.
