On July 22nd through 24th, while attending San Diego International Comic-Con, I ran around to as many of my favorite kids comics creators as I could and asked them all the exact same questions. Keep in mind, exhibit halls are crazy loud and crazy busy, so there is a lot of background noise. Let me know in the comments if you have trouble hearing anything and I’ll translate for you.
I first met Tory Woollcott at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. I think it was on the stairs. She was going up, I was going down, she grabbed my hand and said, “Hi, I’m Tory! I’ve heard all about you! We should talk later!” My response was something like, “Gack! Wabah jabboo!” as I was pushed backwards down the stairs by the people above me. Sadly for me, things were so busy that weekend in Toronto I never had a chance to take Tory up on her offer of a chat.
I finally got that chance in San Diego. We talked about our favorite books, about an amazing new font designed to make reading easier for dyslexics, and about how much more fun we have at parties when there’s an open bar. Tory is charming and I think that comes through in this 5-Question Interview.
Tory’s book is called Mirror Mind, an autobiographical account of her experiences growing up with dyslexia. The response to the book has been really positive and I’m looking forward to reading it.
