I wasn't thrilled with the 0 issue of the new Amethyst either. I have the next three stacked up, waiting for me to read. Part of the problem I have is that I really would have preferred another tween-teen oriented title than an older teen that they new Amethyst is. DC has dozens of titles for older teens. Amethyst is ready-made for a younger audience and really could have pulled in some new readers. I will check out the new issues I have. Christy Marx is a good writer. I have to keep having faith that she won't steer me wrong.

Hi Lori,

First of all, thanks for the review! I remember reading the original series back when I was in 7th grade. What first drew me to the series was the striking character designs and the dramatic cover art, but what ended up keeping me interested was the wonderful storytelling. Watching Amy the teenager grow into Amethyst the warrior was an absolutely perfect representation of the "Hero's Journey" pattern of storytelling, and future writers could learn a lot from the plotting and pacing of the original mini-series. The story still holds up well today, and though I'm not quite as big a fan of the relaunch of Amethyst, I will continue to read it out of loyalty to the original comic.
