On Saturday, June 23, and Sunday, June 24, while attending the American Library Association’s Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA, I ran around to as many of my favorite kids comics creators as I could and asked them all the exact same questions. Keep in mind, exhibit halls are crazy loud and crazy busy, so there is a lot of background noise. Let me know in the comments if you have trouble hearing anything and I’ll translate for you.
The cool thing about having roamed around comics conventions and book trade shows for years is running into neat books from small presses and then years later running into the authors of those neat books after they’ve become Big Deals. Faith Erin Hicks is one of those authors for me. I loved The War at Ellsmere when I first read it back in 2008 and I love that I’ve gotten to meet her now that Friends With Boys has taken off. (You can read more about what Faith has to say about that book here.) Isn’t it great when great things happen to people and books you like?
Books mentioned in this video:
- Fullmetal Alchemist, by Hiromu Arakawa
- Year of the Beasts, by Cecil Castellucci and Nate Powell
- Drama, by Raina Telgemeier
- Out From Boneville, by Jeff Smith
- Pluto, by Naoki Urasawa
