Inside Good Comics For Kids

Interview: MK Reed

Eva Volin

On Saturday, June 23, and Sunday, June 24, while attending the American Library Association’s Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA, I ran around to as many of my favorite kids comics creators as I could and asked them all the exact same questions. Keep in mind, exhibit halls are crazy loud and crazy busy, so there is a lot of background noise. Let me know in the comments if you have trouble hearing anything and I’ll translate for you.

One of the best things about ALA Annual is you occasionally find yourself in a room, at a big table, playing board games with the comics elite. There we all were, at the ALA Play meet-up, gathered around some game that required players to come up with words that would answer some crazy question (example: “Who is the biggest stud in Hollywood?” my answer: “Warhorse.”). Obviously, some of us were better at the game than others (ahem), and one of the stars of the game was MK Reed. She was quick, she was witty, and it was clear that she was thoughtful and well-read. Which is all a really long way of telling you that it’s no wonder her book Americus is as smart as it is. Anyway, here are MK’s answers to my silly questions:
