This Week’s New Comics: The Magic Within

Lori Henderson

It’s Pi(e) week, so while you’re stuffing your face, stuff your brain too with some comics! BOOM! Studios finishes the first Bravest Warriors series by Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward with the release of the final issue. DC Comics releases a trade for the since canceled All-New Batman The Brave and Bold series, and Marvel continues the adventures of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes based on the also canceled cartoon series. At least Marvel is keeping this kid-friendly version of the popular super-hero team going, even without the cartoon. DC could learn something from them.

The Picks:

Sabrina 1 209x300 This Weeks New Comics: The Magic WithinSabrina The Teenage Witch Magic The Within Volume 1 TP – The popular Tania del Rio run on Sabrina the Teenage Witch gets a manga-sized makeover! Sabrina has it tougher than most kids her age, as she faces not just high school, but TWO high schools: She attends Greendale High in the mortal realm and Charm School in the magic realm. Along with all the problems of math and magic, Sabrina finds herself in a love triangle between her mortal crush Harvey and Shinji, a blue-haired magic charmer. On top of all the high school hi-jinx, a real threat is growing in the Magic Realm, and it may hit closer to home than Sabrina ever expected. This volume collects the first 10 issues of del Rio’s run on the series. With an art and story-telling style that was heavily influenced by manga, del Rio’s story of love, life, and supernatural danger will appeal to teens and young adults. The only surprising thing about this volume is that it didn’t come out sooner! Teen collections and middle to high school libraries should make this new addition a must have.

Clone Wars Defenders 208x300 This Weeks New Comics: The Magic WithinStar Wars The Clone Wars Defenders Of The Lost Temple TP – Dark Horse creates a Star Wars story that is thought provoking and fun. A clone trooper of the great Mandalorian warrior Jango Fett contemplates his own worth while on a mission with a Jedi general. It is a journey of self-discovery as the mission leads them through a booby-trapped, abandoned Jedi Temple, as well as an encounter with the Mandalorian Death Watch. This story takes place during season 4 of the animated series, enhancing overall story, and features an appearance by Pre Vizsla and the Death Watch. Dark Horse has been a great custodian of the Star Wars franchise for years, including this newest incarnation in which they have made comics for younger readers as well as teens and older readers. With the move of the franchise to Disney, the Clone Wars cartoon ending, and rumors of the comics moving to Marvel, Dark Horse’s role in the franchise does look murky, but it’s good to seem them not letting it stop them! Elementary and middle school libraries should definitely add this book to their Star Wars collection.
