The Picks:

I Am Rosa Parks HC – Dial Books releases the third in their “I Am” biography series for young readers. Rosa Parks is well known for being the woman to stand up for herself and other African Americans by staying seated on a Montgomery Alabama bus in December 1955. Her arrest not only sparked a movement to end the discriminatory practice of relegating blacks to the back of buses but also launched the country’s Civil Rights Movement. Rosa Parks tells her own story, allowing her to present her heroic deeds in terms that children can understand and appreciate. Writer Brad Meltzer, writer of conspiracy thrillers and host of the History Channel’s Decoded, has created a series of biographies, illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos, that are a friendly and fun way to bring American history to life for young children. And I’m all for making history more interesting to kids. This should be part of every graphic novel and young reader collection.

Guardians Of The Galaxy An Origin Story HC – Marvel Press releases another origin story for their next entry into the Cineverse, featuring appearances by Rocket Raccoon, a raccoon with a rocket launcher, Groot the talking tree, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, the most dangerous woman in the universe, and their leader Star-Lord, the interplanetary policeman for the heroic space squad, The Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel continues to try to familiarize fans of all of ages of this lesser known team of super heroes as the movie’s release date gets closer. And with a team that features a talking tree and a raccoon with a rocket launcher, how could kids not be curious? This would be a great addition to any graphic novel collection or elementary to middle school library.
