The Picks:

Jim Henson’s The Musical Monsters Of Turkey Hollow HC – BOOM! Studios and Archaia bring another Jim Henson gem back from obscurity. Hundreds of years ago, a meteor crashed in a brook on the outskirts of the now picturesque town of Turkey Hollow. Timmy Henderson, a young boy who lives in town, is practicing his guitar one Thanksgiving when he is accompanied by strange, unearthly, musical sounds. He discovers seven furry, goofy monsters who arrived with the meteor—which turns out not to have been a meteor at all, but an egg! Timmy befriends the creatures, each of whom has their own unique musical sound, and they begin to follow him around. But not everyone takes a liking to the visitors, and it’s up to Timmy to protect his new friends and save Thanksgiving! This story was created in 1968 as a script for a TV special, but Henson couldn’t find a network to commit to the protect, so it was shelved until Archaia dug it up. With the Harvey and Eisner Award-winning illustrator Roger Langridge adapting and illustrating the project, this is sure to be another hit!

Bird And Squirrel Volume 2 On Ice GN – Graphix releases the second graphic novel in the Bird & Squirrel series. When last we left Bird & Squirrel, they were “On the Run” south to escape winter. They overshoot the mark a bit and end up crash landing in the South Pole during a raging blizzard. They are found by a penguin named Sakari, who thinks Bird has come to rid her village of a hungry Killer Whale. Squirrel, however, discovers that he is actually to be fed to the Killer Whale as a sacrifice. Bird and Squirrel hatch a crazy plan to escape, and with some good timing, a little luck and a lot of help from Sakari, they just might make it out alive. Bird and Squirrel springs from the mind of James Burks, who has worked on numerous animation projects for kids and families. His first graphic novel for kids, Gabby and Gator, was published by Yen Press and was a made a Junior Library Guild selection. With quirky characters, silly situations, and brightly colored panels, this volume promises to be another engaging, fast-paced story for tweens to enjoy.
