Cover Reveal: ‘Science Comics: Flying Machines’

You’re seeing it here first: Today we have an exclusive first look at the cover for the latest entry in First Second’s Science Comics line, Science Comics: Flying Machines, by Alison Wilgus and Molly Brooks. We have a couple of the interior pages for you too with a look at the young Wilbur and Orville Wright getting their first inspiration—from a toy.

First Second announced the new line of science comics earlier this year, and unlike other educational comics, these ones are creator-driven, so the format and approach are different for each one. MK Reed and Joe Flood’s Dinosaurs, for instance, focused not just on the creatures themselves but on the history of paleontology, showing how strong personalities can affect science as much as actual discoveries, as well as how what we “know” about dinosaurs has changed over the years. It was a refreshing and original take on the subject. Jon Chad’s Volcanoes uses a sci-fi story of life on a frozen earth as a framing tale, while Maris Wicks brings her cute, anthropomorphic style to the underwater world in Corals.

Science Comics: Flying Machines is geared towards readers aged 9-13, and it’s due out in May 2017.
