Susan, I think that traditionally the Mid-Winter has had fewer authors in attendance. I think that is at least partly because the librarians and publishers want to concentrate on other business at this conference. As an author, I am really glad there’s no tradition of bringing the potential winners to the conference so they can all stand around trying not to look chagrinned when they don’t get an award.

In reading the SLJ interviews with Gantos and Raschka, I noticed they were at home or studio when they received the call about winning. I would have thought that their publishers might have had them at their ALA booths, along with other authors of 2011 books. Is this the norm?

Thanks again, so much, for doing this you two! And it was great to meet you at ALA, Jonathan, and talk again with you, Nina! You do a great job with this blog, building up our frenzy for the awards. Okay, this year I hadn’t read any of the Newbery honorees — but that wasn’t your fault! We had talked about them, so I had heard of them and knew something about them.
