Me and my (?) Mino
I am in love with my new little camera from Flip Video!
And I hope the Flip folks will let me keep it to record the events at NECC and pretty much everything else over the coming year.
It fits beautifully into all my bags. It’s tiny. Not much bigger than my iPod (see below). With all the equipment I now carry around in my bag–phone, digital video camera, iPod, digital still camera–to say nothing of all the other stuff, size matters! (I am afraid it’s the price a girl blogger pays these days.)
The Mino charges on my computer and requires no batteries. The USB connection (I love that in itself–no firewire required) is located on the top of the camera, a more flexible location than the side location on its predecessor, the Ultra. Like the Ultra, it holds 60 minutes of video.

The buttons seem easier. I had just a little bit of trouble toggling between Record and Ready with our Ultras. No problem on the Mino. The new button functions on the Mino took just a few minutes for me to get used to.
The Ultras I bought with a PTA grant back in early April were hugely popular in school this year. By June, I had to fight to keep one with me. Teachers were using them to archive and analyze student presentations and students were using them to record anything from casual memories to mini-documentaries. Several faculty members plan to use our Ultras next year to record reflections on learning and research on student research blogs and our class Nings.
Though the folks in our school’s Video Production Department swear by the quality of their gazunta cameras and serious microphones, and choose to schlep their big tripods around, my friend Dan, who heads that department, borrowed one of the school’s little Ultras for his family trip to Disney.
The only downside to the Mino is the loss of the lovely Ultra colors–we have the pink and the orange and I craved the green the moment I saw it.
The Mino comes in either basic black or basic white.
I am learning to like the basics. The size trade-off converted me.
Oh, and the cost is right too, at around $157 on Amazon.
See what you think of my test video.
