YouTube Jr.?: Totlol
It looks like YouTube recently spawned. I just discovered Totlol. If you work or live with young children, you’ll want to check it out too.
Aimed at the under 13 set, the portal is community moderated.
Totlol is an independent website. It was created by Ron, father of two from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. First version of Totlol was introduced for early testing in mid May 2008. The second, an "Official Beta", was introduced at the end of August and the current version was released mid-October.
The About area notes that the site is not a walled garden. It depends on community participation. Parents can scout YouTube through a Totlol interface and submit, describe, and tag videos they’d like to add to the portal. For users who register, the site offers three sizing options, the option of viewing videos in collections, and personalization features–favorites, block lists, a default language. An AgeOptimizer pushes content associated with a requested age group.
Videos may be sorted by ratings, most recent, most viewed, or alphabetically and filtered by language, topic, and recommended age level.
I love the idea of a relatively safe video content playground for little ones.
But just a little warning: like its parent site YouTube, Totlol includes content that its posters may not have had legitimate license to post.
