Exploring design: book covers and movie posters

If you do any teaching related to media and design, you might be interested in two sites I recently discovered.

covers Exploring design: book covers and movie posters

The BookCoverArchive
, devoted to the appreciation and categorization of excellence in book cover design. is a collection of well over 1000 book covers searchable by designer, title, author, art director, photographer, illustrator, genre, publication date, publisher, and typeface.

In addition to a study of design, this site might inspire assignments that ask readers to design alternate book covers for favorite titles.

A delight for browse as well as studying, the site links to a wealth of other resources on cover design. Serious cover fans might choose to grab the RSS feed.

Hollywood Movie Posters, from the Los Angeles Public Library, is an exhibit of 26 movie posters, dating from 1913 to 1943 that reflect developments in movie history.  Among the famous posters are: The Mark of Zorro (1920) and Stormy Weather (1943).

I hope to combine this site with Big Huge Labs’ Movie Poster Maker for our upcoming Hamlet: the Movie project.  (We’ll encourage learners to significantly grow beyond the template, of course!)

The book cover site was a ‘hit’ with one of my art teachers – I sent it to English too – Thanks!!!!

The movie poster exhibit at L.A Public library is very impressive. They have some of the best movie posters in the hobby. I have been a vintage movie poster collector for many years and although I do have some of the posters that are on display there, some many of them are on my want list!
