In Virginia, K12 Joins ITunes U
THE Journal recently featured an article of exciting news for K12 teachers and administrators (and librarians, of course). The Commonwealth of Virginia launched a new educational portal: Virginia on iTunes U.
I’ve written a lot here about open access to educational content. (See my recent posts on Academic Earth, YouTubeEDU.) But most of the stuff we’ve been seeing out there offers university level content. The K12 stuff is coming.

According to the THE Journal article:
iTunes U provides free access to educational content contributed by universities, colleges, K-12 institutions, and even entire statewide education systems. Virginia is not the first such statewide system to embrace iTunes U and contribute educational materials to the large and growing user community. The Tennessee and Maine state departments of education both operate portals within iTunes U, as does Arizona with its IDEAL learning platform. Several other individual K-12 districts, online schools, and other programs also have a presence on iTunes U, along with a plethora of higher education institutions, some of which provide content specifically for K-12 teachers and students.
The new media offered by Virginia include a wealth of content perfect for professional development for the various disciplines. Librarians will absolutely want to share this content with teachers and administrators!
The video portal is part of a larger effort on the part of the Virginia Department of Education to "harness the power of digital media and mobile devices to expand and supplement classroom-based education."
